Many people think that piercings, tattoos, and the like are a phenomenon of modern subcultures – but the opposite is true: Piercing and other kinds of body modification are part of mankind’s history and present in many cultures all around the world. Apparently, human beings have never been happy to leave alone the bodies they were born with, but have always wanted to adorn them, highlight special parts of them, use them as a means of expression, as a spiritual and/or cultural code, and modify them in any possible way. What has been changing over times and continents only is what is accepted and considered as beautiful and what is not. So whether we are applying make-up, painting our nails, dying our hair, restricting our waists with corsets, making piercings, stretching piercings, tattooing or scarifying our skin, filing or correcting teeth, dieting or deliberately fattening ourselves, growing or shaving off body hair, tanning or bleaching our skin, tottering about in high heels or squeezing ourselves into tight jeans, we are all in some way concerned with some form of body modification.

Lately, people look at the customs of ancient tribal societies for inspiration of body modification and find a great source of creativity. Funny enough, at the same time these tribes are about to forget their own body modification customs in order to take on western standards.
